Renzulli’s Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) is a school-wide initiative that addresses the gifted behaviors of above average ability, creativity and task commitment. Individual student abilities and interests are documented and instruction is based on these factors. Staff provides instruction based on their own strengths and interests as well. Although the model seeks to infuse the general education program with activities to provide challenges for ALL learners, there are several non-negotiable issues with this program including: specialized and trained professionals working directly with identified students. gifted educators must give most of their time directly with identified students and, notably, whole-school buy-in. The Renzulli Enrichment Triad
This representation of SEM moves through three phases. Type I Enrichments may be single events or broad outreach activities that expose students to a potential area of interest through a dynamic speaker or novel experience. This might an assembly or a hands-on participatory workshop. The intent is exposure and engagement to spark interest and curiosity. Type II Enrichment activities provide group training, let students practice skills and facilitate the acquisition of knowledge they will need to successfully conduct their own activities. Type III Enrichment initiatives are individual or small group investigations of real problems based on student interests, aptitudes, and skills with the aim to produce a product for real audiences. |
